Cheers Lauren. It is a funny ad isn't it? I agree with you - adaptability based on empathy and understanding is critical in interpersonal relationships, such as that between Barclay Andy and you (that goes for any Andy for that matter. He he.).

I think courtesy and candour as pillars to a bank's service standard are very, very important. (Don't get me wrong, I am not advocating rudeness and greed in the employee-consumer dialogue). What I am saying is that from a company/brand philosophy/belief point of view, the soft and cuddly caring approach becomes rather pointless in today's cynical and informed Consumerland.

Charles, that’s brilliant! That clip is exactly what it’s about. The sooner companies understand this reality and actually do something about it, the stronger their brands will become.

great post fred! that pic cracked me up.
i love that honesty is becoming more prevalent and finally people are realising that it counts. the tricky thing is actually choosing your honesty pitch even more carefully though, as tact and courtesy still go a long way.

take the bank thing - i walked into barclays in westminster the other day and opened an account. just like that. dear andy (my branch manager) was friendly, caring and had just the right amount of candour to make it worthwhile. i'm ok that barclay's make a big deal about caring, actually. so what suits for some, won't suit for others. the key is actually choosing which is which. [cue: lecture from rob c about empathy and understanding.]

No pressure, Charles. No pressure. ;-) Funny you should mention the end of the monologue communication era. I had the pleasure of being in Tokyo two weeks ago to help out on a launch campaign for a new European car model. At the core of our strategy was the thought to break the mold of the monologue model and make the entire campaign a big invitation to an open and honest brand-consumer dialogue in which the brand wouldn’t conceal or shun away from any negative views on the product.

NP - Don't be a fool. You're one of those overly harsh self-critics, aren't you? Seriously, your post on honesty and truth is spot on: “Truth isn’t optional anymore”. Love it.

Frederik I'd love to share them all but I need to keep some powder dry, being freelance and what not. However, in summary we're in the last 3 to 10 years of the traditional monologue communications models for advertising. This is actually an opportunity to do all the stuff that hasn't been done, and to spill over into a dialogue.

Honesty is one of those themes. I thought about sharing it with some Unilever brands but.... the labels I worked on weren't ready for authenticity and I told them that. The right customer will come along one day. Again, great post.

This is a great post Fred. I've just posted about honesty and then I read this - considering deleting mine. This is perfect.

Great post Fredrik. I have a lot of ideas bubbling about this theme that applies even to so called low interest categories.
